McAfee DAT 5958 Update Issues

The problem is a false positive which identifies a regular Windows binary, "svchost.exe", as "W32/Wecorl.a", a virus. If you are affected, you will see a message like:

The file C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe contains the W32/Wecorl.a Virus.
Undetermined clean error, OAS denied access and continued.
Detected using Scan engine version 5400.1158 DAT version 5958.0000.

If you experience problems with a recent DAT update in VirusScan, you can revert to the previous working update. To revert to the previous DAT version in VirusScan 8.x (also known as Rollback):
Open the VirusScan Console by going to Start->Programs->McAfee->VirusScan Console.
From the Tools menu, select Rollback DATs.
When prompted whether you wish to Rollback the DATs, choose Yes.

Dell E1705 with Vista and Netstumbler

UPDATE I have this working on a Dell XPS M1710 as well. This uses an Intel 3945ABG wireless card. Perform the same steps below and NS should work.

I have figured out how to get Vista and Netstumbler to work on the Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop.
First, go to Dell.com and download the XP driver for the wireless card you have installed on your laptop (typically Broadcom)
Next, run the downloaded executable but do not go through the installation process, just extract the files.
Next, go to your Device Manager in Vista and right click on the Broadcom wireless card.
Click on Update drivers.
Point Vista to the location where you extracted the Dell wireless drivers
Follow the appropriate "Next" buttons
Download and install Netstumbler 4.0 and have fun. It should work properly.

Still can't get NS to work?

Open a command prompt, type netsh and press enter

Next type:

wlan show networks mode=bssid

STILL cant get it to work for you? Download this C# application that will work. Its a Netstumbler clone that works with any wireless card. Vista compatible too :)

Trying to remove the password on an Excel Document?

How many times have you wanted to remove the annoying password protection from Excel documents? Now you can. Click on Downloads and download the add-in for Excel. This will allow you to remove the Excel password on the worksheet. Pretty neat, huh?

 NewsDemon Review

NewsDemon.com was nice enough to give me a free account to test out their services. If you don't know what they do, they offer Newsgroup/Usenet services. Many of you have had their services cancelled, if you were on Verizon. This review compares News Demon vs. NewsHosting, which is given to Road Runner customers for free.

First, the main difference is payment. $11 per month for NewsDemon vs. free for NewsHosting (if you are on RR).
Another difference is data retention. While Newshosting offers 200 days, News Demon only has 110 days.

While these may at first seem to make a huge difference in picking News Hosting over News Demon, look further into the connections count. News Demon offers an amazing 20 connection limit, which dwarfs News Hosting of 4 connections. On average, I could download files at 700KB/Second with News Hosting, however with News Demon, the rate jumped up to 1780KB/sec. A huge difference if speed is what you are concerned with.

Setup was the same as any paid for service, where you register your email address and get a user ID and password sent to you. However, as of today, NewsDemon has a bug in their email, where instead of sending your user ID, it sends you the SQL field of p%memberid%. This was easily fixed by visiting their FAQ page, clicking on Forgot User ID, and having it sent to you.

Using a program called Picture Agent, I attempted to download the Newsgroup list, but sadly, the connection keeps being disconnected after getting 50% of the lists. However, I used Grab-It to fetch the list and it appeared to have downloaded the list completely.

Another plus for News Demon is that they offer encrypted sessions. If for some reason you have a want for it, you can get a SSL account for $22.99 per month. Their lowest rate is $8.99 per month with a 10GB limit. If you download movies frequently, this may not be the plan for you, as one movie can be 4 GB large.

Overall, I am impressed with News Demon. I won't be making the switch permanently just yet, but my overall initial impressions are positive.

Keep up the good work News Demon. If you want to sign up for News Demon, click here https://www.newsdemon.com/join-us.php

 Remove Antivirus XP 2008 Instructions

First, in the Start menu, click on Run. If you can't find the Run option, hit WIN+R. (That's the key with the Windows icon on it.)

Type in msconfig, and go to the Startup tab. You're looking for two files. One begins with the string of letters "lph," and the second begins with "rhc". The examples provided are longer strings, "lphc35dj0e1an" and "rhc75dj0e1an", but after the first three letters, the strings are known to change on different computers. Uncheck the boxes next to both of them, then click on Apply and OK or Close at the bottom of the window.

Restart your computer normally. You'll notice that the background hasn't changed. To restore your desktop settings, you'll need to go to Start > Run again, or Win+R. This time, type in Gpedit.msc. On the left nav, look for User Configuration near the middle. Navigate through Administrative Templates, then Control Panel, and finally Display. When you click on display, you'll see a list of options open in the central pane. Right click on "Remove Display in Control Panel," and click "Properties." Then choose "Disabled."

Repeat those same steps for the following attributes: Hide Desktop, Prevent changing wallpaper, Hide Appearance and Themes, Hide Settings, and Hide Screen Saver. Change all to "Disabled," then hit Apply, OK, and restart your computer.

You will still see the Antivirus XP 2008 desktop "theme", but now you can change it. Anywhere on your desktop, right-click and select properties. The first tab that opens should allow you to change your theme. If you also suffer from massive icons, use the last tab on the right, Settings. In the middle of that tab's window you'll see a Screen Resolution option, most likely set to 800x600. Move the slider to the left to choose a more aesthetically appealing resolution.

 Sunbelt Personal Firewall for Vista

Sunbelt Software is pleased to announce that SPF 4.6.1820 is now available for download:

http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/rd/?id=080602BL-SPF_BETA5

Changes in this build include:

4.6.1820.0 - Add Beta warning text on InstallWelcome dialog

4.6.1819.0 - Installation error when the installed sbfwim.sys driver is read only

4.6.1817.0 - Commented a call to config.sendCfgToDriver() when a UI disconnects. Inside this call a synchronized method was called and the lock was already hold in the same thread, thus causing a deadlock in the service.

4.6.1816.0 - Add .cat file to installer so security alert no longer is shown

4.6.1813.0 - Increased font size in tabs texts.
Display protocol number and name in Network alerts.

4.6.1810 - Correctly update "Apply" button when the user saves a change in "Advanced Packet Filter" and "Behavior Blocking" dialogs.
Fixed a bug that prevented to display the registration dialog from the context menu of the systray icon.
Added a capability to tab through the items in a dialog (the tab sequence was broken due to the controls used).
Fix problem with Simple vs. Advanced setting detected on Upgrade.

4.6.1807 - New set of INF files. These files pass the signability test of WLK.
Copy of miniport INF file manually.
Roll back: the change made to delete remote files when the upload was cancelled was causing completed uploads to get corrupted.

System Requirements

- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher
- IBM Compatible 400MHZ Computer with at least 256MB of RAM
- Windows 2000 Pro SP4R1 or greater, Windows XP SP2 or greater (Pro, Home, Media Center), Windows Vista (incl. SP1)
- 15mb of available hard drive space

Please note that this beta build only supports 32-bit versions of Windows, not 64 bit versions.

Upgrading from Earlier Versions of SPF

This beta build will upgrade earlier builds of SPF. If you currently have a version of SPF installed, you can download and run the full setup file listed just above.

Registration Keys

Following installation you can register SPF with the registration key or start a 30 day trial period for the software. Please use the following key to activate the product:

SPF Registration Key 44M72-KM9D8-M86EE-E7CM8-C5CEF

This is a special key generated for use during beta testing and will expire on 7/31/2008.

Known Issues/Limitations

Norton 2008/Norton LiveUpdate users may see CPU spikes when SPF is installed on the same machine.

 GMAIL Storage Increase

It appears Google is trying to keep up with the competition (Yahoo etc.). They have increased their storage limit on free accounts to 3560 megs, which apparently is still not enough for some users. Yahoo has an unlimited storage limit. It might be a matter of time before Google removes the storage limit and ceases to charge users for extra space.

 Unlock your iPhone FREE

It is necessary to have your iPhone with openSSH and the BSD Subsystem on a WiFi network.

You will need to have the folder /usr/local/etc created (you can do this in your SCP client or your terminal with mkdir) in order to save the Minicom default file. But this is probably not necessary if you can just change the modem port and then just get to the terminal.

- Download all required files from
- Use an SCP client to upload bbupdater to /bin
- Upload ICE03.14.08_G.fls and a nor file (you can read the guides on how to get this file or create it)
- Upload the iUnlock file

It's necessary that ALL files have Execute permissions. In your SCP client you can click on properties and enable all Xs in the file. This goes for all your uploaded files.

SSH into your iPhone (on windows you can use PuTTY which is free to download).
First time you SSH it will take a while to generate the keys.
Execute the following command to stop Commcenter
launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
change to your /usr/bin folder
execute

iUnlock ICE03.14.08_G.fls nor
Wait 20 minutes
You'll get some error messages, you can safely ignore them

Run
bbupdater -v

Now you need to open minicom
minicom -s

You need to set the modem to tty.baseband. Look for the guide.
Once in the terminal test your communication with the baseband.
Issue an AT command and hit enter. You should get an OK.

Then issue the following commands:

AT+CLCK="PN",0,"00000000"

You should get an OK
and then

AT+CLCK="PN",2

which should return +CLCK: 0

Reboot your iPhone, insert your SIM card and make your calls!

Gmail Doubles Maximum Attachment Size to 20 MB

Gmail attachment sizes are no longer at 10MB. Users can now send up to 20MB of files. Be aware, not all email providers will allow more than 10MB of attachments.
However, sending 20MB attachments from Gmail to Gmail shouldnt be an issue.
